Naxos rewards choosing your base carefully, because the island is large enough that where you sleep shapes the whole trip. Most visitors split the decision two ways: first the area, then the type of place. This guide is built around the second question, the type of stay, with the area noted on every recommendation so you can hold both in your head at once.
One practical note before you book anything: only the stays in and immediately around Chora and the main beach strip are walkable to restaurants and a bus stop. For a villa in the hills or a hotel out at Stelida, a car makes the difference between a great week and a stranded one. How getting around works.
Which area suits you
Whatever type of place you choose, it sits somewhere. These are the areas the recommendations below fall into, and who each one suits.
| Area | Best for | Car? |
|---|---|---|
| Chora (Naxos Town) | First visits, no car, nightlife, restaurants, the Old Town | Not needed |
| Agios Georgios | Families, walkable town beach, staying close in | Not needed |
| Agios Prokopios & Agia Anna | Beach holidays, easy bus to town, sunsets | Optional |
| Stelida | Quiet luxury, sea views, a short drive to town and beaches | Recommended |
| Plaka & the south | Long empty beaches, seclusion, villa life | Needed |
| The villages | Authenticity, cool mountain air, a slower week | Needed |
Villas and private rentals
A villa is the way Naxos is best enjoyed by families and groups: your own pool, room to spread out, a kitchen for the days you would rather not go out, and usually a view worth the price on its own. Book early for July and August, when the good ones go months ahead.
Naxos Skyline Villas
Villas on one hillside estate above Chora, each with a private pool and a wide view west across the Aegean. Built for families, with a concierge on hand for transfers, a chef, or whatever the week needs. This is our own place, so we will simply say: we built it to be the stay we would want ourselves.
Naxos Rock Villas
Villas on the Stelida headland with wide sea views and twon views, a short drive from both Chora and the Agios Prokopios beaches. Quiet, private, and a car makes it easy.
Villa Marandi Luxury Suites
A relaxed boutique suites property on the Stelida coast, with its own quiet stretch of beach and views back across the water to Naxos Town and the Portara. Uncrowded and calm, a few kilometres from Chora.
Naxian Queen Luxury Villas & Suites
Luxury villas and suites near the Temple of Dionysus and the Agia Anna beaches, consistently well reviewed. A polished choice for couples and small families who want the beach strip on the doorstep.
Onym Curated Villas
Beachfront villas a hundred metres from Plaka beach, each with a private pool and jacuzzi, plus penthouse suites above them for couples who do not need a whole villa. For the traveller who wants the island's best beach at the end of the path.
Natura Villas
Villas at Mikri Vigla, well set up for families, within reach of the windsurfing beaches and the quieter southern coves. A good base if the plan is sand and water more than town.
Naxos Elysian Villa
A private villa inland at Galanado with a pool, a jacuzzi and long views over the Aegean. For a group that wants seclusion and space, with town a short drive down the hill.
Villa Tranquillity
A contemporary three-storey house near the coast, roomy and modern, a strong whole-house pick for a family or two couples travelling together who want the place to themselves.
Agia Anna Living
An affordable-luxury standout on the Agia Anna beach strip: comfortable, well kept and a good deal for the location. Where to look when you want the beach without the top-tier price.
GkF Luxury Villas
A collection of luxury villas that couples come back to, with sister properties around the island. Worth a look if the ones above are booked out for your dates.
Five-star hotels
Naxos does luxury quietly. There is no wall of chain resorts here; the five-star places are small, design-led and mostly on or near the best beaches. These four are the island's top tier.
Nissaki Beach Hotel
The island's most consistently top-ranked luxury hotel, on the town beach at Agios Georgios, with a pool and direct beach access. Polished service, and walkable to Chora, which is rare at this level.
Ammothines Cycladic Suites
A small family-run house of suites set right on the dunes at Plaka, built in Naxian marble with a pool and its own beach service. Named for the dunes it sits on. Calm, contemporary, and about ten minutes from the airport.
Laguna Coast Resort
A Small Luxury Hotels of the World member on the Stelida coast, recognised as one of the more sustainable resorts anywhere, and quietly loved for its atmosphere and its breakfast. A destination in itself.
18 Grapes Hotel
Just eighteen rooms at Agios Prokopios, several with private pools or hot tubs, and the kind of personal service a small house can give. For couples who want to be looked after.
Four-star hotels
Often the smartest booking on the island: real character and a beach or a view, without the top-tier price. This is where a lot of returning visitors end up.
Iria Beach Art Hotel
Repeatedly named one of the best beach hotels in the Cyclades, right on the sand at Agia Anna. Art-led, warm, and a short bus ride from Chora.
Alkyoni Beach Hotel
Whitewashed Cycladic architecture on St George beach, with a loyal following that rates it among the very best on the island. Comfortable, well run and close to town.
Naxian Collection
A Small Luxury Hotels member near Laguna beach on Stelida: boutique villas and suites, generous grounds, and a real sense of seclusion a short drive from the action.
Liana Beach Hotel & Spa
Beachfront at Agios Prokopios with a spa, sauna and hammam, and food that gets a mention more often than most hotel restaurants do. A comfortable all-rounder.
Naxos Rhyton
Four suites, adults only, looking straight across at the Portara from a terrace with its own outdoor jacuzzi. Small, private and walkable to everything in Chora. The concierge earns its praise.
El Mar Naxos
A honeymoon favourite, singled out for genuinely exceptional hospitality. For couples who want to be quietly spoiled.
Three-star hotels
Do not overlook these. On Naxos the three-star hotels are where the island's hospitality shows most: family-run, friendly, spotless, and a fraction of the price. Several are walkable to town or right by a beach.
Hotel Grotta
A waterside favourite in Chora, walkable to the harbour and the Old Town, and a regular recommendation from independent travel writers. Warm, well kept, and superbly placed.
Naxos Island Hotel
A small beachfront hotel at Agios Prokopios praised again and again for the warmth of its staff. Intimate, friendly, and right by one of the best beaches.
Hotel Astir of Naxos
Near St George beach and well liked for its staff and location. A dependable, good-value base within walking distance of town.
Akre Hotel
A frequent top pick close to the airport, with strong marks for hospitality. Handy for an early flight or a late arrival, and friendly with it.
Lianos Village Hotel
Eight whitewashed Cycladic blocks set in gardens above the bay at Agios Prokopios, five minutes from the beach. Family-run, and singled out as the best of several three-star stays by more than one recent visitor.
Antony Suites
Simple, comfortable suites in Chora, well placed for the town and the port. A solid in-town base at a fair price.
Korali Boutique Hotel
A small boutique hotel with more style than its tier suggests. Worth a look for character on a mid-range budget.
Proteas Hotel & Suites
Comfortable rooms and suites, well kept and welcoming. A dependable option when the better-known names are full.
Whatever you book, arrange your airport or port pick-up before you arrive. The rank empties fast in summer, and most of these stays are an easy transfer rather than a walk. See getting around.
Asked often
Where is the best area to stay in Naxos?
For a first visit, Chora (Naxos Town): walkable, full of restaurants, no car needed. For a beach holiday, Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna, a short bus ride south. For quiet luxury, Stelida. For seclusion and villa life, Plaka and the south. For a slower, authentic week, the mountain villages.
Should I stay in Naxos Town or by the beach?
Naxos Town if you want restaurants, nightlife and the Old Town on your doorstep and no need for a car. The beach strip (Agios Georgios, Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna) if you want sand first and are happy with a short bus or walk into town. Agios Georgios is the one spot that gives you both.
Is a villa or a hotel better in Naxos?
A villa suits families and groups who want space, a private pool and a kitchen, and it is the most characteristic way to stay on Naxos. A hotel suits couples and shorter stays, or anyone who wants daily service and a beachfront location without booking a whole house.
Do I need a car if I stay in Naxos?
Not if you stay in Chora or on the main beach strip, which are walkable and on the bus. For a villa in the hills, or a hotel out at Stelida or in the south, a car makes a real difference. See our guide to getting around Naxos.
When should I book accommodation in Naxos?
For July and August, several months ahead, especially for villas and the smaller boutique hotels, which sell out first. For spring and autumn you have far more freedom and better rates.
Is Naxos good for a family holiday?
Very. The shallow west-coast beaches, the villas with pools, and the walkable town beach at Agios Georgios make it one of the easier Cycladic islands with children. A villa or a family-friendly hotel near a calm beach is the usual choice.
