The best time to visit Naxos
Ask anyone who lives here and they will say September. Here is the month-by-month case, and the reasons you might disagree.
Last reviewed August 2026
The short version
- The best month
- September. Warm sea, thinner crowds, softer light, everything still open.
- The best value
- May, June and early October. Lower prices, and the island at its greenest in spring.
- The liveliest
- July and August. Everything running, every boat sailing, and every bed booked.
- The catch
- The meltemi blows hardest in July and August, mostly in the afternoon.
- For hiking
- April and May, or October. Not July. The interior is brutal in midsummer.
- The season
- Roughly mid-May to late October. Naxos never fully closes, but much of the tourism does.
Most Cycladic islands have one answer to this question: come in summer, because outside summer there is nothing there. Naxos is different, and the reason is that it is a working island before it is a holiday one. Around twenty thousand people live here year-round, farming a green interior, so the island has a life of its own in February. That gives you more months to choose from than Mykonos does.
Month by month
Typical values below, not promises. The Aegean does what it likes.
| Month | Days | Sea | What it is like |
|---|---|---|---|
| April | Around 19°C | Around 17°C | Green, wildflowers, perfect walking. Too cold to swim for most. Things start opening. |
| May | Around 23°C | Around 19°C | Warm, quiet, still green. The hardy swim. Excellent value and excellent hiking. |
| June | Around 27°C | Around 22°C | Proper summer without the crush. Long days, warm sea, wind still moderate. |
| July | Around 29°C | Around 24°C | Hot, dry, busy, windy. Essentially no rain at all. Book everything ahead. |
| August | Around 30°C | Around 25°C | The peak of everything: heat, crowds, prices, and the meltemi. |
| September | Around 26°C | Around 24°C | The local's answer. Sea at its warmest, crowds thinning, light turning gold. |
| October | Around 22°C | Around 22°C | Mild, quiet, still swimmable early on. Things begin closing through the month. |
| November to March | 15 to 18°C | 15 to 17°C | The island's own season. Green hills, rain, closed beach bars, real life. |
Why September wins
The sea is a lagging indicator. It spends all summer absorbing heat and reaches its warmest in late August and September, just as the air begins to soften and the August crowds go home. You get August's water with June's crowds, and the light in the last hour of the day turns the whole west coast gold. Nothing has closed yet. This is not a secret among people who live here; it is simply the month we take our own holidays.
Why you might pick otherwise
- You have children in school. Then it is July or August, and that is fine. The island is at its most alive, every boat runs, and the meltemi keeps the heat honest.
- You want the interior. Come in April or May. Naxos is the greenest of the Cyclades and in spring the Tragea is genuinely lush, the wildflowers are out, and you can walk all day. Doing the same in July is a bad idea.
- You want it cheap and empty. Early October. Warm sea, mild days, and the prices drop the moment the schools go back.
- You want the real island. Winter. There is almost no tourism, the hills are green, and the tavernas that stay open are full of locals. It is a different holiday, not a worse one.
The meltemi decides more than the temperature
The meltemi is a dry northerly that blows across the Aegean in summer, hardest in July and August, and typically strongest through the afternoon. It is the single most important thing about a Naxos summer and almost no guide leads with it.
It is not simply a nuisance. It is the reason 30°C on Naxos feels bearable when the same temperature inland in Greece does not. It scours the humidity out of the air, it makes the light startlingly clear, and it is why the island has been milling grain with wind for centuries.
What it actually costs you:
- Exposed beaches get gusty. The long open west-coast beaches like Plaka can turn into a sandblasting by mid-afternoon. The move is to go early, or head for the sheltered south, or to Sahara behind Mikri Vigla.
- High-speed ferries get cancelled. Conventional ships keep sailing. If you have a flight to catch, this matters.
- It is worst in the afternoon. Mornings are often still. Plan the beach day accordingly.
- It is a gift if you sail or surf. Mikri Vigla is one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in the Mediterranean precisely because of it.
If you want warm sea and calm air, come in June or September, when the meltemi is present but far gentler. If you want to kitesurf, come in July or August and be grateful for it.
What closes, and when
Tourist Naxos runs roughly from mid-May to the end of October. Outside that, this is the pattern:
- Beach bars and beach clubs go first and come back last. Expect nothing on the sand before May or after October.
- Seasonal hotels and villas shutter. The ones in Chora are likelier to stay open than the ones on a beach.
- Boat trips and water taxis stop entirely. The Small Cyclades day trips are a summer thing.
- Ferries thin out but never stop. Piraeus to Naxos runs all year; it just runs less often. Confirm the sailing rather than assuming.
- The airport keeps running, though the schedule is lighter.
- Chora does not close. There are tavernas, bakeries, pharmacies and a hospital, because twenty thousand people live here and need them.
Greek Easter is the biggest event of the year on Naxos, and it moves: it usually falls in April or May but rarely on the same weekend as Western Easter. If you want to see the island at its most itself, come then. Check the date for your year before you book anything.
Match the month to your trip
| If you want | Come in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Warm sea and space on the sand | September | The sea peaks now and the crowds have gone. |
| Hiking and the mountain villages | April, May or October | Green, walkable, and no midday furnace. |
| Windsurfing or kitesurfing | July or August | The meltemi at full strength. |
| Nightlife and the island at full volume | July or August | Everything open, everyone here. |
| A family beach holiday | June or September | Warm water, gentler wind, calmer beaches. |
| Value | May or early October | Shoulder prices, most things still open. |
| Boat days to the Small Cyclades | June to September | Outside that they largely do not run. |
| The island with no tourists in it | November to March | Green hills, empty roads, real life. |
Once you have your month, check the sailings. Ferry frequency changes a lot across the season, so it is worth seeing the actual boats before you fix your dates:
Whichever month you pick, the rank is a lottery.
In August because there are too many people. In February because there are too few taxis. Book ahead and a driver is waiting with your name on a board, whatever the season.
- Running year-round, not just in season
- Ferry and flight tracking, so a delay costs nothing
- Fixed price, quoted before you travel
- Online booking and payment, confirmed instantly
Asked often
What is the best month to visit Naxos?
September. The sea is at its warmest after a summer of absorbing heat, the August crowds have gone, the light is at its best, and nothing has closed yet. May, June and early October are the next best, and are better value. July and August are hot, busy and windy, though the island is at its liveliest.
How windy is Naxos in summer?
Windy. The meltemi, a dry northerly, blows across the Aegean through July and August and is usually strongest in the afternoon. It keeps the heat bearable and makes the light clear, but it can make exposed west-coast beaches gusty and it sometimes cancels high-speed ferries. Mornings are often calm.
When is the sea warmest in Naxos?
Late August and September, at roughly 24 to 25°C. The sea lags the air by about a month, which is why September combines the warmest water of the year with thinner crowds. In May it is around 19°C, which is swimmable but bracing.
Is Naxos open in winter?
Partly, and more than most Cycladic islands. Around twenty thousand people live on Naxos year-round, so Chora keeps its tavernas, bakeries, pharmacies and hospital. What closes is the tourism: beach bars, seasonal hotels, boat trips. Ferries from Piraeus run all year, just less often.
When should I visit Naxos for hiking?
April, May or October. Naxos is the greenest island in the Cyclades and in spring the interior is genuinely lush, with wildflowers and comfortable walking temperatures. Hiking Mount Zas in the middle of a July afternoon is a bad idea, and people try it every year.
Does it rain in Naxos?
Hardly ever in summer. July is effectively bone dry. Almost all of the island's rain, around 370mm a year in total, falls between October and March, with January the wettest month.
Is Naxos busy in August?
Yes, it is the peak. Every bed, boat and hire car is spoken for, prices are at their highest, and the popular beaches are full. It is also when the island is at its most alive. If you come in August, book everything months ahead.
