Island on Foot
Chalki to Moni – The Valley Walk
Looking for a walk through olive groves, chapels, and living history?
The trail from Chalki to Moni winds through the Tragea valley — often called the “Byzantine heart” of Naxos. You’ll pass ruined towers, olive presses, and the exquisite 9th-century church of Panagia Drosiani. It’s a gentle, shady route ideal for morning or late afternoon.
🚶 Distance: About 5.5 km round trip
🕰️ Time: 2–2.5 hours at a relaxed pace
Apeiranthos to Fanari – Above the Clouds
Want to walk in silence, with all of Naxos beneath your feet?
Fanari is the highest peak in Naxos (approx. 900m), and the trail from Apeiranthos is a steady climb with huge payoffs. Wild herbs scent the air, marble outcrops gleam, and the views stretch to the sea on both sides. It’s a rewarding challenge for hikers seeking solitude.
⛰️ Distance: 6–7 km one way
🕰️ Time: Around 3–4 hours round trip
Kinidaros Loop – Music and Marble
What if your trail passed through stone and song?
The village of Kinidaros is known for its musical traditions and marble quarries. This loop hike starts and ends in the village, leading you past dramatic quarry walls, stone bridges, and wide, wild views. It’s a lesser-known trail with a strong character.
🎵 Local Note: If you’re lucky, you might hear locals playing music in the square as you finish.
Filoti to Zas Cave – Myth and Mountains
Ever climbed a mountain that’s also a myth?
Mount Zas is the tallest mountain in the Cyclades, and its cave was said to be a refuge for the young god Zeus. The trail from Filoti passes springs and dramatic landscapes before reaching the dark mouth of the cave, and possibly continuing to the summit.
🧗 Distance: Around 5 km to the summit (shorter to the cave)
🕰️ Time: 3–4 hours total
⚠️ Note: The summit trail is steep and exposed — wear proper shoes and carry water.
Melanes to Flerio – Statues in the Fields
Want something short, shaded, and full of surprises?
The valley between Melanes and Flerio is home to some of Naxos’ oldest kouroi — ancient, unfinished marble statues lying where they were abandoned centuries ago. The trail is short and easy, ideal for families or those with limited time.
🪨 Distance: 1.5–2 km round trip
🕰️ Time: 1 hour with stops
💡 Good to Know: It’s well-marked and shaded — a great midday walk.
Eggares Riverbed – Seasonal Stroll
Ever walked a river trail through citrus groves and reeds?
In spring and early summer, the Eggares valley offers a lush, green walking route along a dry (or gently flowing) riverbed. You’ll pass citrus trees, old stone mills, and get a peek into the quieter, rural side of Naxos life.
🌼 Distance: Varies — from short loops to 4–5 km
🕰️ Time: Flexible — perfect for gentle exploration
🧭 Before You Go
👟 Good shoes matter: Even on short trails, the terrain can be uneven. Closed shoes with grip are best.
💧 Always bring water: Especially in summer — many trails pass no springs or shops.
📲 Download offline maps: Cell signal isn’t always reliable. Maps.me and Komoot are hiker favorites.
🧢 Start early or late: Avoid the midday heat and enjoy better lighting for photos.
📍 Look for signage: Naxos has an improving network of waymarked trails — follow red-and-white markers and wooden signs when available.
